I think nearly everyone, who administers some PCs or servers has used openssl. And almost everything there is straight forward.
To create your own key and certificate, just run:
openssl req -x509 -sha256 -nodes -days 365 -newkey rsa:2048 \
-keyout privateKey.key -out certificate.crt
